Do they make good parents? How do you remove the fry - just lift out the shell or scoop them out somehow?

I have limited experience; however, from what I have gleaned from others: at 10 days, remove the spawning shell/cave to its own tank and keep the water quality very high.
I hope to have more experience soon

Kush, I will
I do not have any expectations for success this time around as I will most likely be going through a double move very soon. We sold our house this past week and have to be out by March 3rd We will be in temporary housing for about a month while we wait to close on our new home. So, that presents some challenges with the fish room. My altolamps will take up residence with my sister in Illinois until it is convenient to move them into the new house. Any altolamp fry can go into a 10 or 20 gallon tank and move along with us each step of the way. How well they handle the double move and a rookie caregiver is up to the Lord. That is, assuming, there is any fry at all. I still have to find her yet. If she spawned in a shell or a breeding cave = great. If she spawned in a crevice of my rock work =

Look forward to the pics
I forced mine to get used to me. They have to look at my ugly mug in order to eat. Took them a couple weeks to stop being super shy. I also conditioned them to a certain tapping pattern on the trim of the tank to equal a dinner bell. I tap my little ditty and they all come rushing out They are smart fish. They knbow the diference between me and another person. They will not come out if they don't recognize the person.

Hey TC,
Here is the requested fish count in the 55 altolamp tank:
2 A. compressiceps (Muzi gold head) 1m/1f
6 A. calvus (Black Congo White Pearl) 2m/4f
In my 125, I have 6 A. compressiceps (Orange Fin) 2m/4f
All are wild caught.
Thanks,
Russ

My new altolamps have adjusted to the move quite well. At the house we sold, I had them in the basement which didn't get much foot traffic and they were kinda shy. Now in the temp loft apt, they are in the family room and they are getting used to seeing people all the time so they come out MUCH more. I have a little more aquascaping to do this weekend and I will post some updated pics once the dust clears.

Not yet Jim. Getting out of the house and taking a bunch of big tanks out of service was quite stressful and I am relieved that I don't have to take care of any big tanks anymore. I think, that I discovered my limits on the number of tanks that I want to take care of. I just don't want to spend that much time on fish anymore (unless I am catching trout while wading my favorite freshet with my son).

LOL
A Sasquatch is OK, the North American species of bigfoot is, generally, not aggressive to humans (the Yeti in the Andies is a different story - I wouldn't want to run into one of those dudes). However, we do have a moutain lion in the area that killed a horse (he is always in the back of my mind). No joke.
